GOOD FRIDAY: IT IS FINISHED

READ: JOHN 18:28-19:37

“This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.” - John 18:32

Throughout his account of the gospel, John sprinkles in these short little commentaries that give us a better insight into what is going on. This verse probably didn’t stand out to you in a profound way. It’s not something you’re going to have stitched onto a throw pillow, but there is much in this verse worthy of our consideration.

First, it shows us that despite all of the horrific things that are happening to Jesus, God is in control. There were numerous occasions where the religious leaders had wanted to kill Jesus, but they were restrained because the hour had not yet come. Now, Pilate is trying to release Him, but Jesus tells him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above.” The circumstances are chaotic, but Jesus proves His power over everything and everyone by laying down His own life for us.

Secondly, Jesus is fulfilling prophecy. The manner of His suffering and death are unusual. Because a Jewish council had convicted Him, Jesus should have been stoned, but it was foretold that He would be lifted up and hung on a tree. The guards broke the legs of the criminals crucified next to Jesus, but they only pierced His side because the Scriptures declared that His bones would not be broken and they would look on the one whom they had pierced. Jesus defies the natural trajectory of events and thus fulfills all the promises of Scripture.

Third, Jesus’ whole ministry was destined for this purpose. Throughout John’s gospel we are reminded about the ticking clock, the hour has not yet come, but it is fast approaching. When Jesus declares, “It is finished!” The alarm goes off. Jesus has fulfilled His purpose in bearing the full weight of God’s wrath on our behalf.
