Mark’s Gospel does not record what happened on Saturday during Holy Week. It was the Jewish Sabbath, so no one could do anything.

Try to put yourself in the disciples' shoes. They couldn’t get close to the tomb where Jesus was buried. Their secret hiding place in the Garden of Gethsemane had been discovered. Maybe the people they stayed with in Bethany were under suspicion. The twelve disciples, except Judas, wouldn’t be caught wandering the streets for fear of facing a similar fate as Jesus.

The courage they once boasted about on Thursday had faded into shock and fear. Their leader, the one they hoped would bring about the Kingdom of God, had died. He had told them what was going to happen, but they hadn’t listened. He had promised a resurrection, but they still didn’t believe it. Certainly, they were trying to remember everything Jesus had said and fit it into a logical context.

Use today to revisit and re-read any sections you might have hurried through this week. There was a lot to process on Tuesday. Think about all the details from each day as they come together to tell the story of how Jesus prepared himself to face the cross. Stay with the disciples as they consider the implications of Jesus’ death.
