Full Reading: Luke 22:1-6

Luke does not provide us with many details as to Judas’s motivation to betray Jesus, but it is safe to assume that he was tempted by greed. However, Luke’s Gospel does reveal that Satan entered Judas to help facilitate this dastardly act.

Interestly, Satan had requested authority over the other disciples as well. Jesus tells Peter, “Behold, Satan demanded to have you (all), that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:31-32).

Both Peter and Judas would be tested. Both would fail. Peter would deny Jesus three times and Judas would betray Jesus with a kiss. Yet Judas would go on to die in infamy, and Peter would use his failure as a lesson to future generations of Christ followers.

When it comes to following Jesus, we need to be aware of our vulnerabilities. Then, when we fall, we should not hide our mistakes in shame. Instead we should cling to the righteousness of Jesus and accept the grace of God as our witness to others of where our hope comes from.
