Galatians 3:17-4:14 deals with the covenant of God with Abraham. This covenant was made before the giving of the law of Moses. It was an unconditional covenant which was not subject to abrogation. Once made, it was made forever. The law which came after this could not annul it. Furthermore the law itself was not given to make justification possible, but to reveal sin and to turn men to Christ Who is the fulfillment of the Abrahamic promise. Listen to this part of the study (Galatians 3:17-4:14)

In Galatians 4:15-31 Paul carries through the theme of justification by faith. He continues to show that maturity demands faith; immaturity demands self-righteousness, ritualism, works. Paul continues his dramatic appeal to the Galatians suggesting that they ought to be above this. Having appealed to their pride, he now appeals to their affection and intelligence in his effort to get them back on solid ground. He uses Sarah and Hagar as illustrations. Sarah speaks for faith; Hagar of the law and of bondage.

Chapter five of the epistle is the great chapter on Christian liberty. The previous two chapters are theological. This one is practical. Earlier Paul has told us what Christian liberty is and he has defended his view of this liberty. Now he applies it to the lives and hearts of his readers. Paul deals with two of the great problems connected with Christian liberty. One is its restraint by legalism and the other is its misuse or perversion of lawlessness. This is a great chapter for the Christian to dwell on.

In the closing chapter of Galatians Paul turns from his treatment of Christian liberty in its practical outworking and claims that there is a law to which every Christian is subject. This is the law of love. He relates it to two areas of life—bearing one another’s burdens in the moral life and in the temporal needs of life. As he concludes this gracious letter Paul glories once more in the cross of Christ and there falls from his lips that glorious benediction —the grace of the Lord Jesus be with your spirit.
