Paul authored the Epistle to the Galatians. He wrote it to defend the Gospel of grace against those who insisted upon the keeping of the Mosaic law. Galatians is the Magna Charta of Christian liberty. It is no less valuable today than when it first was written. Saving faith versus works is still a real issue. In the first 17 verses Paul salutes and rebukes the Galatians and cites his personal experience. The contrast between faith and works is drawn. Listen to this part of the study (Galatians 1:1-17)

In Galatians 1:18 to 2:13 Paul deals at some length with important questions. Having justified his apostolic authority he mentions his training for the ministry and his acceptance by the church and the apostles as a genuine Christian and true follower of Jesus Christ. At that time and forever he was the chief exponent of the Gospel of Grace even having to rebuke the Apostle Peter.

In Galatians 2:14-21 Paul moves along in his argument concerning his apostolic authority. Peter insisted on the observance of the Mosaic ordinances. Paul resisted this attitude and prevailed in his resistance. He eloquently argues against the necessity of circumcision for Christians, and reaches a peak in that matchless verse, Galatians 2:20 which every believer should know by heart.

Galatians 3 and 4 are central in the argument demonstrating justification by faith. This segement, chapter 3, verses 1 through 16, the apostle urges his listeners to remember that they have already been justified. There is nothing that needs to be added to it. He strongly argues that no man has or ever can be justified by the works of the law. The blessing of Abraham has come to the Gentiles not by law but by faith.
